The History of Raleigh-Egypt High School

Raleigh-Egypt High School's main building was built in 1969. Because construction was not completed by the beginning of the 1969-70 school year, the Class of 73 spent their first month of high school in spare rooms at Spring Hill Elementary. Classes were first held at the new high school on Wednesday, October 1, 1969, with construction still in progress. At that time there were 304 students and 15 teachers.

The school's name had been chosen by a committee of P.T.A. members from the four feeder elementary schools: Egypt Central, Coleman, Spring Hill, and Scenic Hills.

The Pharaohs team name and the school colors of red, white, and black were chosen by the first freshman class.

The school's original logo (left) was designed by local graphic artist Malcolm Pressgrove, father of Randy (Class of 73), Micki (74), and Jenny (76) Pressgrove.

The Sphinx yearbook was published for the first time in the spring of 1970, even though the school had only a freshman class.

The gymnasium was started in late spring 1970 and completed that September.

The Annex (right) was started during the 1970-71 school year and completed in time for classes in the fall of 1971.

The football field was used for the first time during the 1972-73 school year, and the Class of 73 held their graduation ceremony there (left). By that time, there were 1,625 students and 73 teachers at REHS.

With the annexation of Raleigh by the City of Memphis, Raleigh-Egypt entered the city school system in the 1975-76 school year.

Egypt Middle School was built in 1979 on a landfill to the east of the gymnasium.

A new cafeteria building was built in 2004 over the rectangle grassy space behind the main building. Yes, "Goat Hill" (right) is no more.

Other than these changes, the school looks pretty much as it did during its early years, which is more than can be said for most of us who were there at the time!
